Presidents Ride (Nelligan camp)
Sorry I couldn’t ride. Work commitments with deadlines to meet (so I can getaway to IOM). But at least I could carry the gear and firewood in the ute.
The weather was picture perfect, clear sky, no wind and most importantly NO RAIN!! At smoko Sat morning I raced up to the pie shop to see every one off before heading back to the salt mine. I was very pleased to see about even numbers for the dirt and road rides. Dirties were Phil F, Paul K, Bob C, Campbell F, Michael K, Allan P, Caz M and Adam F. Roadies were George B, Debbie G, Keith S, Alan S, Darren S, David P, Frank B and Phil B. Bill M was working and joined us at Nelligan later as did Glenda S and Maria H. Michael K also turned up in his ute with some of the BBQ gear. The dirties headed out around the Western Distributor, the roadies headed south to Central Tilba. I got away from work about midday, raced home to get Deb and arrived at Nelligan about 3:30. I was surprised to see the riders there already.
The ute was unloaded and tents erected. There were 8 in tents, Deb and I had the bunk house and the rest had pub rooms. I started to get the fire going. I nearly had it when a neighbour offered some fire lighters. That did the trick, even with Alan S doing his best to suffocate it. Note to all “don’t let Alan S near a fire”. Looking around to see who was there I noticed a few missing. Paul K said Campbell F was pretty crook so he went home accompanied by Adam F (his son). Phil B returned home from the road ride also due to illness. Bill M arrived with a sick sounding Matchy. Primary belt problems.
The sun was setting, the camp fire was providing warmth and Bill & Belinda M got the BBQ ready. The menu was sausage sandwich or bangers and bread. Leftovers from the show. The popular choice was sausage sandwiches but a few wanted bangers and bread. Lucky Belinda brought some sauce sachets from the shop. The club condiments are in the club warehouse and nobody thought to get them. A good feed was had by all. Now it was time to wash it down with some cleansing ales around the campfire.
Tall tales were told, obvious lies were believed, the world’s problems solved and motorcycle mechanics were discussed. The fire was working well but the smoke followed me from one side to the other. The pub dwellers slowly filtered off. The campers enjoyed the fire and consumed various liquids to ward off dehydration. A few tents were starting to emit chainsaw noises. George was looking for somewhere to crash so we offered him a bed in the bunkhouse. At about 11pm Deb and I retired leaving Paul K and Belinda to look after the fire.
Sunday morning was even better than Saturdays. I was up by 1st sparrow fart. I wandered down to the camp site to find Darren S packing his tent already. There was just a glimmer of life left in the fire so with a little kindling and a firelighter it was up to temp in no time. The last two logs would last till we all left. It was about now I needed a coffee. Oh bugga, it’s back at the warehouse too. Dave P to the rescue, he went back over to his pub room and borrowed all the coffee sachets from two rooms. Bill and Belinda flared the BBQ up for breakfast. Sausages, bacon, eggs and tomato with extra sausages. After breakfast I handed out the new club patch to all members attending. If YOU want one you had better turn up on a ride or meeting.
Pack up time, tents pulled down, sleeping bags rolled, bikes packed. Bills Matchy loaded on ute with riders gear. The roadies filtered off one by one, the dirties were going over Shallow Crossing and straight back to Milton. I went straight to Bill’s to unload the bike and gear. A beer or two later Paul K turns up on the traily. He needed to unpack his tent to find his keys to the van.
All up another great weekend. I hope to RIDE next time.
Cheers
